Located off the coast of Alicante, Spain, Tabarca has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The island was originally used as a refuge from piracy. In 1768, the island was declared a fortified settlement by King Charles III of Spain, with the aim of protecting the local population from attacks by North African pirates.

The king ordered the construction of a fortress and ramparts to fortify the island. The island was renamed Nueva Tabarca, named after the Barbary pirates who previously used it as a base. Under his protection, a small community of fishermen and farmers began to flourish on the island.
